Macau’s imports rose 267.6 percent year-on-year to 15.6 billion patacas last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.
In the first five months of the year, imports increased 142.7 percent to 59.03 billion patacas.
Total exports grew 59.6 percent to 990 million patacas last month, while they increased 29.9 percent to 5.5 billion patacas. Re-exports accounted for 82.8 percent of total exports in May.
Mobile phone imports leapt 2,616 percent to 3.1 billion patacas last month, Macau’s biggest single import item. In the first five months, imports of mobile phones rose 705 percent to 7.7 billion patacas.
Gold jewellery imports jumped 2,362 percent to 1.13 billion patacas in May, while they rose 372 percent to 4.37 billion patacas between January and May. Imports of watches grew 1,145 percent to 1.22 billion patacas. They increased 322 percent to 5.2 billion patacas in the first five months of the year.
