Citizens celebrate CPC centenary

Macau citizens yesterday celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with a raft of activities.

At the iconic Golden Lotus Square in Zape, a flag-raising ceremony was held in the morning to mark the occasion. The local post office issued a set of commemorative stamps featuring the historic CPC sites during the past century.

A number of community groups organized their members to watch the live broadcast of yesterday’s ceremony in Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square which marked the Party’s centenary. CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered an important speech during the ceremony.

At a daycare centre for the elderly, dozens of senior citizens gathered in front of the television early in the morning to watch the ceremony which began at 8 a.m.

Senior citizen Poon Siu Beng told Xinhua she felt very excited after watching the ceremony. “It’s was rare opportunity for us to witness the centenary celebrations. We must unite and build a more prosperous country,” she said.

In the evening, a light show was staged in the city centre, presenting the historic sites during the CPC’s development.

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and the first chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), Edmund Ho Hau Wah, attended the ceremony in Beijing yesterday morning. Edmund Ho attended the event in his capacity as vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). – Xinhua, MPD
