A local woman reported to the Judiciary Police on Tuesday that she had been cheated out of 1.33 million yuan (1.64 million patacas) in an online scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said in a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Chan, the victim, who is in her forties, told the police that she met a male netizen on a smartphone app on May 8. They became friends and started chatting. They later used the QQ app to continue their chats.

The victim said that her online “friend” had tried to persuade her on May 22 to deposit some money in an online app to earn dividends but she ignored him. Her “friend” pushed her again on May 28, telling her that the online app offered earnings of three percent for deposits of 300,000 yuan, six percent for 800,000 yuan and 10 percent for 1.5 million yuan. The victim finally got interested in investing and registered an account on a website provided by her “friend” and a purported customer service provided a number of accounts under different names for the victim to deposit her money into. The victim transferred a total of 1.33 million yuan to these accounts between May 28 and June 15. Her “friend” later blocked her chat account so that she was unable to contact him. Finally she suspected that she had been defrauded by her “friend” and decided to report the case to the police.
