Macau’s casinos generated gross gaming revenue (GGR) of 6.5 billion patacas last month, a year-on-year growth of 812.5 percent.
In June last year, due to severe travel curbs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic local casinos’ receipts amounted to a mere 716 million patacas.
However, June’s revenue fell 37.4 percent month on month, resulting in the gaming sector’s lowest monthly revenue this year.
Analysts told The Macau Post Daily yesterday that this was due to the fact that Guangdong province was hit by a regional COVID-19 outbreak in May which quickly decreased Macau’s number of visitor arrivals from the mainland. On June 7, the Macau government tightened its COVID-19 border entry curbs, requiring all those crossing the Guangdong-Macau border to present proof of a negative nucleic acid test (NAT) effective within 48 hours instead of the previous seven days prior to arrival here.
In the first half of the year, casinos’ receipts rose 45.4 percent to 49.0 billion patacas.
