The recent implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong is a very important point of reference for Macau, Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak said yesterday.

Hong Kong’s National Security Law (NSL) has enriched the practice of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle by optimising its regulatory system, a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) quoted Wong as saying.

Wong, a former public prosecutor, was speaking to reporters after attending a seminar via video link about the first anniversary of the successful implementation of the NSL in Hong Kong. The seminar held at the Macau Science Centre was organised by the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies. Apart from Hong Kong and Macau, the video link also included Beijing.

Wong quoted part of the speech delivered during the seminar by Xia Baolong, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and director of the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO). Xia underlined that the NSL has had a great effect in Hong Kong, having enabled the special administrative region to return to stability after social chaos. The NSL's positive results illustrate its timely implementation by safeguarding Hong Kong's security and stability, Wong said.

Wong also highlighted Macau’s ongoing effort to safeguard national security. He noted that in 2009 Macau enacted its Law on Safeguarding National Security, followed by the setting-up in 2018 of a special committee to safeguard national security. The policy secretary overseeing Macau’s public security and law enforcement agencies also underlined the related amendments to the Judicial Organisation Framework Law, the enactment of the Cybersecurity Law, and regulatory updates linked to immigration issues.

Macau’s effort of promoting and safeguarding national security could be advanced further based on Hong Kong's example, Wong said.
