Macau’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issued yesterday for the first time its highest hot weather alert – Orange – as the mercury hit 37.6 degrees Celsius at its temperature measuring station in Dr. Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park.

According to the observatory, Orange indicates that it is “extremely hot” in Macau.

The SMG website lists the following recommendation when the Orange alert has been issued:

– Take precautions against heatstroke and drink more water.

– The elderly, children, persons with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and the obese would easily feel unwell in the extremely hot weather. It is advised to stay in an indoor venue with moderate temperature and good ventilation.

– Avoid outdoor activities during the scorching period. – Re-schedule outdoor work in the morning or late afternoon, if possible.

– Those engaged in outdoor activities should wear loose, thin, and light-coloured clothes. Take a rest in the shade immediately if not feeling well.

– Avoid prolonged exposure under sunlight, and take precautions against UV radiation

– Do not stay inside a vehicle parked outdoors for a long time.

– Consult social welfare services if necessary.

The weather station forecast that it will be “very hot” today. The maximum temperature will be 33°C or above. “The public is advised to beware of heatstroke, and drink water frequently.”

At 2:30 a.m. today the temperature stood at 29°C.

The Health Bureau (SSM) and Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) issued separate statement yesterday, urging the general public and workers to take extra precautions due to the very hot weather.
