A local man was arrested on Saturday for driving under the influence (DUI) and blocking traffic by sleeping in his illegally parked car on a road in Areia Preta district, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Choi Iok Kin said at a press conference on Monday.
The local man surnamed Chan, who is in his twenties, told the police that he works as a delivery driver.
According to Choi, a resident reported to the Public Security Police (PSP) at about 1 a.m. on Saturday that a car was parked illegally in Rua 1º de Maio, blocking the traffic and the driver was asleep behind the wheel.
Choi said PSP officers arrived at the scene and after repeated attempts, they managed to wake the driver up.
The officers noticed that Chan reeked of alcohol and therefore conducted a breathalyser test on him. The test showed that Chan’s alcohol concentration was 2.12 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood, confirming the offence of driving under the influence.
Under questioning, Chan admitted that he had had a meal and was drinking earlier in Rua Central da Areia Preta. He then planned to drive to his home in Taipa but when he drove along Avenida 1º de Maio, he stopped and fell asleep, according to Choi.
The case was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Saturday. Chan faces a DUI charge. The case was awaiting judgement at the time of the press conference.
Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Choi Iok Kin looks on during Monday’s press briefing in the PSP pressroom.
