A local man was arrested on Sunday for driving under the influence (DUI) and evading responsibility earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a press briefing on Monday.
The 33-year-old suspect surnamed Tai told the police that he is an accountant.
According to Lam, the Public Security Police set up a roadblock on Rotunda Ouvidor Arriaga in Taipa early Sunday. At around 3 a.m. they stopped a car which they could see had damage to the passenger door. Some parts of the car door had fallen off and traces of green paint could be seen. The driver did not tell the officers what had happened, and the officers noticed that the driver reeked of alcohol. Tai was given a breathalyser test which showed that his alcohol concentration was 2.24 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.
After scrutinising CCTV footage, PSP officers discovered that when Tai drove along Alameda Dr. Carlos D’Assumpção earlier that day, he crashed into five green railings on the roadside, after which he drove away and crossed the bridge to Taipa until he was stopped at the roadblock. The police subsequently found the vehicle’s broken-off parts in Alameda Dr. Carlos D’Assumpção. Tai admitted that he drove under the influence, Lam said.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) Tai faces charges of DUI and evading responsibility, according to Lam.
