Mobile phone imports rise 800 pct in Jan-July

Macau’s imports of mobile phones rose by 800.1 percent to 12.36 billion patacas in the first seven months of the year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

Mobile phone imports in July increased by 653.8 percent to 2.1 billion patacas year on year.

Mobile phones were Macau’s number-two import item between January and July, after imports of beauty, cosmetic and skincare products which grew by 254.5 percent to 14.02 billion patacas.

Other major import items in the seven-month period were food and beverages (up 40.2 percent to 7.9 billion patacas), garments and footwear (up 148.5 percent to 7.8 billion patacas), watches (up 360.3 percent to 7.5 billion patacas), handbags and wallets (up 276.3 percent to 6.5 billion patacas), and gold jewellery (up 436.9 percent to 5.9 billion patacas).

Total imports rose by 143.6 percent to 89.2 billion patacas between January and July, while exports increased by 29.5 percent to 7.8 billion patacas. Re-exports accounted for 86.0 percent of all exports.

Some 70.0 percent and 15.0 of Macau’s exports in the first seven months were shipped to Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland respectively.,

Most imports originated from the mainland (33.2 percent), France (16.9 percent) and Italy (11.3 percent).
