Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) head Chan Tsz King told reporters yesterday that there are three “highly suspicious” cases related to the election campaign under investigation, involving activities such as suspected bribery and public entities not having been neutral.

Chan made the remarks yesterday morning after he cast his vote at the Instituto Salesiano polling station.

Chan noted that since the beginning of the election campaign, CCAC officers had patrolled more than 8,000 times and rarely found any law-breaching activities. He said that until yesterday the CCAC had filed 25 suspected cases, three of which he described as “highly suspicious”, adding that all the 25 cases are under investigation.

When asked about candidates having given out mooncakes, Chan said that the issue had been reflected to the Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission (CEAL), after which the latter warned candidacy lists against the practice. He pointed out that since then the candidates had complied with the commission’s guidelines and stopped handing out mooncakes.

Chan said that the CCAC had received a lot of complaints and some cases were also transferred from the Electoral Affairs Commission, adding that, however, only cases with “concrete evidence” would be investigated as some of the complaints had no proof indicating that the alleged violation actually occurred.

Chan also pointed out that the there is no law banning candidacy groups from picking up and driving voters to polling stations as long as they are not promoting their own group while they are providing such a service. He stressed that the CCAC will investigate all the cases.
