A 37-year-old divorced local woman reported to the Judiciary Police (PJ) on August 19 that she had been cheated out of HK$43,000 in an online scam in August, PJ spokesman Lou Chan Fai said at a press conference on Friday.

According to Lou, the victim told the police that she met a South Korean man who claimed to be a Canadian national on a social media app on July 23. They later became online lovers.

Lou said that the victim’s “boyfriend” told her on August 5 that he would send her a gift, and told her that he would go to work in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in South America, and he would contact her later. Her “boyfriend” told her on August 13 that he had arrived in Guyana but forgot to take his credit card and any cash with him. He told her that he did not have any money to pay for the quarantine fee to stay at a hotel and asked for her assistance in paying the fee.

According to Lou, the victim later remitted a total of HK$43,000 to her “boyfriend” in seven remittances. Her “boyfriend” continued to ask her to remit more money to him. When the victim talked about the matter with a friend she finally suspected to have fallen for an online scam. The victim then decided to report the case to the police.
