About 49,000 patacas worth of trees and shrubs have been destroyed in Seac Pai Van in Coloane since early June, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Cho Man said yesterday.

Speaking during a regular press briefing, Chan said the police were informed of the case by Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) officials on Thursday, who said that someone had chopped down four trees in the public areas of the Seac Pai Van public housing estate on the previous day, leaving only the stumps.

Chan said the IACM officials also told the police that since early June, the bureau had found that someone had been gradually chopping down the shrubs in the area. About 180 shrubs had been damaged so far, the IACM officials told the police.
