Macau’s Civil Protection Operations Centre said in a statement on Tuesday that citizens should not fabricate or purposely spread false information about the COVID-19 pandemic, as otherwise they may face criminal liability.

The statement underlined that Macau is still in a state of immediate prevention in response to the current COVID-19 outbreak, and it urged the public not to fabricate and disseminate deliberately false information about the pandemic with the intent of arousing public fear or cause disturbances, in violation of Article 26 of Law No. 11/2020 (Civil Protection Legal Regime), adding the offenders face legal action by the authorities.

Members of the public are advised to pay close attention to the government’s official announcements and not to believe rumours, according to the statement.
