The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced tonight the resumption of school classes on Monday, October 4.

In-class teaching had been suspended in the wake of the detection of a COVID-19 Delta variant cluster at two local medical observation quarantine hotels late last week.

According to a DSEDJ statement, the bureau has been paying close attention COVID-19 prevention and has maintained close communication with schools to assess the situation.

After listening to the opinions of the Health Bureau (SSM), "if there is no major change in the epidemic," all primary and secondary schools will resume classes on October 4,  the statement said.

However, the statement underlined that all sports and extracurricular activities will be suspended until further notice. Regarding higher education, in-class teaching can also be resumed on Monday.

At the same time, schools are required to strictly implement the guidelines on COVID-19 prevention issued by the DSEDJ and the Health Bureau, "and to thoroughly clean and disinfect the school environment before class resumption," the statement said.

The bureau urged students and teachers to get their COVID-19 as soon as possible to help Macau achieve herd immunity. The government said earlier this week that students and teaching and other school and higher education staff who have not been inoculated against the novel coronavirus will have to undergo nucleic acid tests (NATs) once a week.
