A local woman in her thirties was cheated out of 15,000 patacas in an online scam last week, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a press conference on Monday.

According to Lei, the victim, who owns a shop, reported to the Judiciary Police last week that she had been cheated in an online scam. She told the police that she met a male netizen who claimed to be of mixed Hong Kong and Taiwan descent. He told the victim last Wednesday that he had a gift he was sending her by express delivery from Poland. The netizen gave her the name of the express delivery company and the parcel serial number. A staff member of the purported delivery company sent the victim an email on Friday morning that the parcel had arrived but that she needed to pay a “customs fee” of 15,000 patacas.

After the victim transferred the amount online to a bank account, she was asked by the “delivery company” to make additional payments. The victim searched on the internet for the express delivery company but was unable to find it and finally suspected that she had been cheated so she reported the case to the police, Lei said.
