A local female real estate agent was arrested last week for cheating three local landlords out of a total of HK$66,600 paid by three tenants, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a press briefing on Friday.

The 52-year-old suspect is surnamed Iong.

According to Lei, three local residents reported separately to the Judiciary Police between June and July this year that they had been cheated by a female real estate agent in Taipa when she was assisting them in letting their flats to three tenants. Iong had arranged the three parties sign contracts and after each tenant paid Iong his or her deposit, one-month rental payment as well as Iong’s commission, the three landlords were unable to contact her. The victims reported the case to the police.

Lei said the three tenants had paid HK$37,400, HK$27,700 and HK$18,000 respectively to Iong each to rent flats in Taipa. The three landlords only received HK$5,500, HK$6,000 and HK$5,000 respectively from Iong. The Judiciary Police believe that Iong pocketed HK$66,600.

According to Lei, Iong went to a police station last Tuesday to assist in the investigation. However, she refused to reveal any details about the three cases and the whereabouts of the ill-gotten money.

Iong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an abuse of trust charge, according to Lei.
