A local man was arrested last Friday for stealing a taxi in September, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Wai Chon said at a press briefing yesterday.

The 31-year-old man surnamed Che told the police that he works as a casino PR staff member.

According to Wong, a local male cabbie reported to the Public Security Police on September 16 that his taxi which he parked on the side of the road earlier that day in Rua da Ilha Verde had vanished. He told the police that he parked the cab around midnight there and returned to start work at around 6 a.m. but the vehicle was gone. The victim got to know later that day with the help of other cabbies that the taxi had been found in Rua de Seng Tou in Taipa. Wong said that the victim’s driving permit, his car key and 1,500 patacas were all in the car.

Wong said PSP officers scrutinised CCTV footage and identified Che as the suspect. The Public Security Police told Che to report to a police station last Friday. Under questioning, Che admitted to stealing the taxi and driving it away. He claimed that he had been drinking earlier that day and forgot what he did.

Che has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of stealing a vehicle in order to drive it, according to Wong.
