Macau’s 116 hotels and inns recorded 444,000 guests in October, a year-on-year growth of 1.0 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

While mainland guests dropped by 5.6 percent to 340,000, local guests rose by 35.6 percent to 78,000, according to a DSEC statement earlier this week.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions worldwide, staycations have become increasingly popular among Macau people.

Guests’ average length of stay rose by 0.2 night year-on-year to 1.9 nights.

The number of available guestrooms increased by 0.9 percent to 36,000.

The bureau underlined that hotels and inns designated by the Macau government for COVID-19 medical observation quarantine and self-health monitoring were excluded from the compilation of the sector’s data.

The DSEC statement also pointed out that Macau’s number of overnight visitors dropped by 63.9 percent month-on-month in October due to tightened cross-border COVID-19 control and prevention measures between Macau and Zhuhai in early and mid-October. Consequently, guestrooms’ average occupancy rate fell by 4.9 percentage points month-on-month to 44.6 percent in October. However, the rate rose by 4.8 percentage points year-on-year.

In the first 10 months of the year, the number of guests leapt by 94.3 percent year-on-year to 5.48 million.
