Responding to lawmakers’ questions during yesterday’s Q&A session in the legislature’ hemicycle on what the government would do to further promote breastfeeding, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng said that by the end of the year mothers could breastfeed their babies in 60 breastfeeding rooms located in government bureaus and on the premises of other public entities.

Several lawmakers yesterday criticised the government for not providing enough places for mothers to breastfeed their babies, urging the government to improve the situation.

Lawmaker Wong Kit Cheng, a nurse and vice president of the influential Macau Women’s General Association (commonly referred to as Fu Luen) slammed the government for not fully implementing guidelines regulating the facilities for breastfeeding rooms and their management.
