A man from the mainland was arrested in a guesthouse in the city centre on Saturday for stealing motorcycle earlier that day, claiming that the theft was due to a “mobility issue”, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Choi Iok Kin said at a press briefing yesterday.
The 40-year-old suspect surnamed Cao holds an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau (colloquially known as a two-way permit).
According to Choi, a local resident reported to the Public Security Police on Saturday night that his motorcycle had vanished. He told the police that he had parked it in Estrada do Istmo in Cotai (路氹連貫公路) at noon that day and gone to work. When he returned at night, he discovered that his motorcycle was gone. At that time, the victim remembered that he had forgotten to take the ignition key with him. PSP officers scrutinised the area’s CCTV footage and identified Cao as the suspect. The officers retrieved the stolen motorcycle which Cao had parked in Pátio da Casa Forte (下環圍) on the peninsula later that day and arrested Cao at the guesthouse in the city centre.
Under questioning, Cao admitted to stealing the motorcycle. He claimed that he has a mobility issue so when he saw the motorcycle with the key in it, he decided to take it for a ride.
Cao was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday, facing charges of stealing and using a vehicle without the owner’s permission, according to Choi.
