A lorry crashed into the central divider near the campus of the private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Taipa yesterday morning, injuring the driver and the two passengers, the authorities said.

According to a statement by the Fire Services Bureau (CB), the accident occurred at around 10 a.m. yesterday when the lorry was turning into Avenida Wai Long (偉龍馬路) from Rotunda do Istmo (路氹連貫公路圓形地). The lorry driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the central divider outside the Nam Kwong petrol station (南光氹仔油站) on the roundabout, the statement said.

Firemen and paramedics rushed to the scene, where they had to rescue the driver with the help of tools as he was trapped in his seat by the badly damaged vehicle body. The two passengers were able to leave the vehicle on their own.

According to the statement, the two passengers sustained minor injuries while the driver suffered “relatively serious” injuries. All three were taken to the private Kiang Wu Hospital.

The driver is a 31-year-old local man, while the two passengers are non-resident workers from the mainland aged 42 and 47, according to the statement.

The driver suffered bone fractures to his left ankle, while the 42-year-old sustained contusions to his left shoulder and the 47-year-old sustained minor lacerations to his head.

The three were in a stable condition when they were taken to the hospital, the statement said.

As of last night, there was no follow-up information on the conditions of the three injured.

According to a Public Security Police (PSP) statement, the lorry driver passed a breathalyser test. The police have provisionally concluded that the driver was “driving carelessly” when driving the lorry the roundabout.

The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
