A local man, in his sixties, was arrested recently for involvement in a sham marriage, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement last week.

According to the statement, the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) referred a suspected sham marriage case recently to the Public Security Police for follow-up investigation. The bureau told the police that a local man had applied for a family reunion, for his wife to move to Macau. However, the bureau discovered contradictions in the couple’s statements and therefore transferred the case to the PSP Immigration Department for follow-up investigation.

PSP officers later intercepted the suspect in a flat in Estrada Nordeste da Taipa. The suspect told the police that in 2015 he met a woman in the mainland who is 28 years younger than him. They agreed that if he could assist her in obtaining a Macau ID card, she promised that she would take care of him until the end of his life. They then married in the mainland in the same year but they never lived together, according to the statement.

The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). The suspect faces charges of involvement in a sham marriage and false statement, according to the statement, adding that the police are continuing their investigation to look for the mainland woman involved in the case.
