‘WTT Champions Macao 2021 China Stars’ will be held from January 19-23 at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion, with Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun pointing out yesterday that most of the athletes will be from the mainland.

Pun made the remarks after a press conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Galaxy in Cotai that introduced event details and ticketing information.

Regarding the competition details, Pun said that there will be men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles, and a round of 16 matches will be played in each category, adding that top athletes from the mainland will come to Macau, and the list of players will be announced soon.

Pun also said he hoped that efforts will be made “for our local athletes to participate in this competition”, adding that it would be a “valuable opportunity” even if there may only be one spot available.

Pun also told reporters that due to the government’s COVID-19 pandemic prevention measures, there will only be around 1,500 seats available at the venue. However, he was quick to add that people “can also watch the competition through live streaming or on television”.

Starting from today until January 18, according to a statment by the bureau, tickets can be bought at 10 designated  Circle K outlets such as at Nam Ngai Kok Building in Areia Preta, Sun Star Plaza near the Barrier Gate and at Broadway Macau in Cotai, or online at www.sport.gov.mo/WTTmacao2021/ticketing. Moreover, tickets can also be bought at the event venue on January 19-23.

Upcoming sports events and activities throughout the year

Pun also briefed reporters about the upcoming sports events and activities throughout the year.

Pun said that this month the “2022 MGM Macao International Regatta” and the WTT will take place. Other sporting events to follow include “summer sports events for teens”, basketball matches, the Macau International 10k, and the 41st Macau International Marathon.

Pun also said that he hoped that through these events, locals and visitors can enjoy the city as a safe destination that is able to host large and international sports events.

Aside from the annual sports events and competitions, Pun said that “there won’t be a lot of new sports events” due to the international competitions that are being held outside of Macau, such as the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing next month. However, he was quick to add that “public sports events such as cycling and sports carnivals” will be held during the Chinese New Year (CNY) to enable locals to have “healthy events that they can participate in”.

Moreover, Pun noted that the 2022 Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou in the second half of the year. “I believe that local athletes will be busy preparing for both the international and local games this year”.
