A drunken Hong Kong man was caught early New Year’s Eve for driving under the influence (DUI) and evading responsibility earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Erica Cheong Im Sim said at a press briefing yesterday.
The 35-year-old Hong Kong suspect surnamed Ng told the police that he works as a designer.
According to Cheong, the Public Security Police went to Estrada Flor de Lótus in Coloane on New Year’s Eve at about 3 a.m. to investigate a traffic accident. PSP officers discovered that 32 water safety barriers (水馬), three road signs and 10 traffic cones (雪糕筒) had been damaged. The officers later discovered a car parked in Rua Marginal da Concórdia, the front of which was severely damaged.
However, there was no one in the car at that time and the officers contacted the owner who told them that her husband (Ng) had driven the vehicle earlier that day. When the officers later questioned Ng, they found him reeking of alcohol. Ng’s alcohol concentration was 1.34 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood. He told the police that he was sleepy when he was driving home at around 2 a.m. and felt that his car had merely “brushed” something in Estrada Flor de Lótus so he continued driving to Rua Marginal da Concórdia and then walked home. He claimed that he drank three cans of beer at home before he went to sleep that night. He denied driving under the influence but admitted that he evaded responsibility, Cheong said.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Ng faces charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and evading responsibility, according to Cheong.
