The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that the tuition fees for local students in undergraduate, master’s degree and doctoral degree programmes will be increased in the 2022/2023 academic year.

According to the statement, for local students the tuition fees in undergraduate programmes at the university are currently 30,000 patacas per year, adding that starting from the 2022/2023 academic year, the tuition fees will be adjusted to 37,500 patacas, while the tuition fees for local students in undergraduate programmes at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) amount to 43,400 patacas per year.

Meanwhile, the tuition fees for local students in master’s degree programmes currently stand at 36,000 patacas per year. Starting from the 2022/2023 academic year, the tuition fees will be adjusted to 48,900 patacas, yet the tuition fees for local students enrolled in master’s degree programmes at PolyU are 143,700 patacas or even more. The statement noted that the tuition fees for local students in doctoral programmes now amount to 21,760 patacas per year, which will be increased to 37,500 patacas, while the tuition fees for local students in master’s degree programmes at PolyU are 43,400 patacas.

The statement stressed that the tuition adjustment will only apply to new admissions and will not affect existing students, adding that even with the increase the university’s tuition is still much cheaper than Hong Kong’s.

The statement said that the university has reduced tuition fees two years in a row due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including a one-time tuition fee remission of 5,200 patacas for first-year local undergraduate students or local undergraduate students who resumed their studies in the 2021/2022 academic year, and a one-time tuition fee remission of 6,000 patacas for first-year local undergraduate students or local undergraduate students resuming their studies in the 2022/2023 academic year.
