Two local women reported to the police separately early this month that they were cheated out of HK$521,109 in two online cryptocurrency scams, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said at a press briefing on Monday.

According to Chong, a 27-year-old woman reported to the Judiciary Police on Sunday that she was cheated out of HK$129,000 in an online investment scam. She told the police that she got to know a male netizen last November who persuaded her to invest in cryptocurrency. The woman downloaded an app and invested in TWA – Adventure Token. She initially invested HK$100 and earnt HK$2,400. She then deposited HK$40,000 and HK$81,500. When her account later showed a US$7,400 profit, she wanted to withdraw the money. However, she was refused by the purported “Customer Service”. The victim realised that she had been defrauded and reported a total loss of HK$129,109 to the police.

Chong said a 30-year-old woman reported to the Judiciary Police on Saturday that she was cheated out of HK$392,000 in an online investment scam. The woman told the police that she got to know a Singaporean male netizen last October, and they became online lovers. Her “online boyfriend” convinced her to invest in bitcoin so she downloaded an Rcoin app and deposited HK$10,000, HK$60,000 and HK$320,000 between end of last November and Friday in her account. Her account later appeared to show that she had made some profit, but the purported “Customer Service” staff came up with excuses when she wanted to withdraw the “profit”. She then was also unable to contact her “online boyfriend” and finally realised that she had been defrauded so she reported a loss totalling HK$392,000 to the police.
