World, a contemporary dance performance by Yabin Studio, gives the audience a glimpse of the dancing world and portrays the struggles between dancers and dancing in a pas de deux, choreographer and dancer Wang Yabin told The Macau Post Daily on Tuesday during a collective interview at the Macau Cultural Centre in Nape.
Pas de deux is French for “step of two”, i.e., a dance performed by two.
According to Wang, tomorrow and on Saturday Wang’s World will showcase at the Small Auditorium of the Macau Cultural Centre.
Wang said that her performance begins with every dancer running because that is what they do every day. She pointed out that they even have tools such as barres that they use every day.
“I put our daily routine in this performance as well as our struggles and relationship with dance. There will be a pas de deux between a female dancer and a male dancer and it represents our difficulty to break through the chain of familiarity,” Wang pointed out.
Wang described dancers’ relationship with dance as mysterious. “Our practices are absolutely difficult and hard but we really enjoy every bit of it. I want to share this paradoxical feeling with the audience,” she added.
When asked what inspired her to create a dance about dancing, she said that it was to remind herself and dancers of their “original intention”. “Sometimes we forget why we are doing something or why we used to love it so much. As soon as we are familiar with a dance routine, we forget the passion we had for dancing. And I want to remind myself and everyone else of that enthusiasm,” Wang said.
