The Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday that a hit-and-run driver killed a dog in Avenida do Estádio Macau in Taipa on Monday.

According to the statement, the police were told by a person on Monday at around 4 p.m. that a heavy vehicle drove away after hitting a dog. The statement said that when the police arrived at the scene, the dog was already dead.

The statement said that the police discovered that a heavy vehicle drove across a zebra crossing when the offlead dog was crossing the avenue. The statement added that the dog was run over by the vehicle and that it died at the scene of the accident.

The statement underlined that the police have contacted the driver of the heavy vehicle. The police have asked the dog owner and the driver to assist in the investigation.

Meanwhile, a Facebook user named Sammi Tang posted in a group on Monday, saying that she was the owner of the dog. According to the post, she was walking her leashed dog towards the Macau Olympic Aquatic Centre when a dump truck suddenly sped up at the zebra crossing. She said in the post that her dog was walking in front of her so it was dragged under the wheels and she was almost dragged under the truck as well. She added that even though the truck driver knew that he had hit something, he still did not stop and drove away. She also said that when she reported the matter to the police, the police said that there were no CCTV cameras near that zebra crossing, therefore they could only check the CCTV footage from nearby to try to find the driver – which the police eventually did.

While the police statement said that the canine had been “offlead” when crossing the avenue, the owner said in her Facebook post that the dog had been leashed when the incident happened.

This undated Facebook photo posted by Sammi Tang on Monday evening shows her dog that was fatally run over by a truck in Taipa earlier that day.
