The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that its Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) recently held the “First Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Conference on Translational Medicine and the Fourth Macao Stem Cell Symposium”.
According to Wikipedia, “translational medicine is a rapidly growing discipline in biomedical research and aims to expedite the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments by using a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative, ‘bench-to-bedside’ approach.”
The conference was hosted by the FHS and organised by the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute (ZUMRI), with assistance from various entities such as the Macau Society for Stem Cell Research and Zhuhai Hengqin ImStem Biotechnology Co. Ltd. It was also attended by guests such as public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre Clinical Director Pang Heong Keong and Economic and Technological Development Bureau Division Chief Chan Chou Weng, the statement added.
The statement noted that that the two-day event combined both online and in-person elements, attracting over 400 participants such as scholars, biomedical experts, and students from different parts of the world, who discussed “the latest progress in translational medicine, stem cell research, and the clinical application of research results in the two areas”.
The statement said that according to FHS Dean Deng Chuxia, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the conference to undergo several alterations and acted as a platform for scientists, experts, and researchers from the GBA and other regions to share their latest research findings, as well as for students to exchange ideas with scholars, the statement said.
The two-day event included three keynote speeches, namely by US National Academy of Sciences member Prof. Rudolf Jaenisch, Chinese Academy of Sciences member Prof. Song Erwei, and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre Prof. Wu Jun. There were also 17 session talks, the statement underlined.
The statement did not say when exactly the event took place.
Meanwhile, the statement pointed out that this year’s UM conference review and award committee received over 100 entries, including over 70 posters and 30 research images. Recipients of the Best Poster Award were UM alumni and Sun Yat-sen University Fifth Affiliated Hospital’s postdoctoral fellow Xing Fuqiang and “11 other young scholars”, while UM PhD student Huang Borong and “four other young scholars” received the Best Image Award.
