Jobless rate rises to 2.9 pct in 2021

Macau’s general unemployment rate, which comprises local and non-resident workers, rose by 0.4 percentage points year-on-year to 2.9 percent last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

According to a DSEC statement last week, local residents’ jobless rate grew by 0.3 percentage points to 3.9 percent in 2021. Macau’s median monthly employment earnings of local and non-resident workers stood at 15,800 patacas. Locals’ median monthly employment earnings amounted to 20,000 patacas.

The media monthly employment earnings per household increased by 500 patacas year-on-year to 28,000 patacas.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the median monthly employment earnings of local and non-resident workers dropped by 400 patacas quarter-to-quarter to 15,600 patacas, while those of locals remained unchanged at 20,000 patacas.

Informally, non-resident workers are known as blue-card holders.

Employment in retail trade (34,500) and the construction sector (33,500) rose by 1,800 and 1,600 respectively quarter-to quarter, while that in the gaming and junket sectors (76,500) dropped by 3,600 in the fourth quarter of last year.

In pre-pandemic 2019, Macau’s general unemployment rate was 1.7 percent, while the unemployment rate of local residents stood at 2.3 percent, both down by 0.1 percentage point year-on-year.
