The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement on Friday that all areas of the ecological ponds in the western section of Avenida da Praia in Taipa will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during festivals and holidays as a result of “World Wetlands Day”.

According to the statement, World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2 (Wednesday), with this edition themed “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”.

The theme highlights the importance of adopting wetland conservation measures and the significance of wetlands in “combatting climate change, and achieving the goals of biodiversity and sustainability”.

The statement pointed out that the ecological ponds are “an important ecological zone in the whole wetland”, with their biodiversity having also increased after a number of years. It also provides an “abundant food source” for birds and is crucial in “maintaining the ecological balance” in the city.

The bureau has installed “explanation boards” that introduce basic information about the zone’s various species to help the public learn about the area’s biodiversity. The statement added that visitors can scan QR codes on the boards for the “Biological Database of Macau”, which has “detailed popular science information about the species”.

The statement emphasised that while in the area, members of the public should maintain silence and refrain from disturbing the animals, as well as reminding them to take their rubbish with them when they leave the area, and comply with all the respective rules such as “General Regulations Governing Public Places”.
