Credit & debit cards rise in 4Q of 2021

The Macau Monetary Authority (AMCM) announced in a statement yesterday that the total number of personal credit cards and debit cards issued by local banks increased in the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to the statement, there was also an increase in the turnover of credit cards and debit cards from the previous quarter, while a continuous rise on a quarterly basis in “the number and the value” of local mobile payment tools transactions was also recorded.

The statement noted that the total number of personal credit cards issued by local banks stood at 1,538,947 at the end of December, an increase of 1.9 percent over the previous quarter. Moreover, the total number of debit cards issued by local banks reached 1,951,643, up by 1.6 percent from the previous quarter.

At the end of December, the statement noted, credit card credit limit granted by local banks reached 45 billion patacas, up by 0.4 percent from the end of September. Credit card receivables also totalled 2.6 billion patacas, while the rollover amount totalled 752.9 million patacas, representing 29 percent of credit card receivables, the statement added.

Moreover, the delinquency ratio decreased by “0.06 percentage points to 2.3 percent” when compared to the end of September.

In the fourth quarter, the credit card turnover was 5.3 billion patacas, a 9.8 percent increase quarter-to-quarter, the statement said. The cash advance turnover was 158.3 million patacas, “occupying 3.0 percent of total credit card turnover”. The statement added that the number of credit card transactions rose by 13.9 percent from the previous quarter, reaching 8 million.

Credit card repayments, including payments for interest and fees, increased by 5.3 percent from the previous quarter to 5.4 billion patacas.

Meanwhile, the number of debit card transactions other than cash withdrawals rose by 4.7 percent from the previous quarter to 437.2 thousand. The debit card turnover totalled 1.1 billion patacas, an increase of 16.4 percent from the previous quarter, the statement noted.

Meanwhile, the statement said that transactions via local mobile payment tools increased by the previous quarter’s 5.4 percent to 56.9 million in the fourth quarter. The transaction value reached 5.7 billion patacas, up by 8.5 percent from the third quarter.

The statement pointed out that the average amount per transaction was 101.1 patacas at the end of December, while “mobile payment terminals and QR code signs” amounted to 90.9 thousand, expanding by 8.1 percent quarter-to-quarter.
