Resort operator Wynn Resorts (Macau) held a press conference yesterday morning for the launch of the “Exhibition of The First Torch of The Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games”, with a spiral torch named “Flying” being displayed in the lobby of Wynn Macau in Nape until February 20.
The torch is red and silver to symbolise fire and ice, “flying with passion to illuminate the ice and snow, and warm the world”, according to the statement. Moreover, the torch also symbolises the “exchange and mutual learning between civilisations and the Olympic vision uniting the world in solidarity”, the statement points out.
The press conference was attended by Wynn Resorts (Macau) President and Executive Director Linda Chen Chih-ling (陳志玲), Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun and Deputy Director General of the Department of Publicity and Culture at the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau Yin Rutao.
The statement pointed out that this is the first “official exhibition nationwide” of the Olympic torch and is the beginning in a series of activities to take place in the city for the “Olympic Expo”.
In her welcoming speech Chen said that the torch is a valuable symbol that incorporates the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Chinese culture, apart from expressing the vision and spirit of the Games. Moreover, the exhibition communicates the torch’s meaning and the Winter Olympics’ sportsmanship, Chen stressed.
The statement quotedInternational Olympic Committee (IOC) Vice President and Beijing Organising Committee Vice President for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games Yu Zaiqing as saying that the torch is a “significant symbol of this year’s Winter Games”, integrating traditional Chinese culture with the “modern Olympic spirit”.
Tourism during CNY holiday ‘meets’ Wynn Resorts’ (Macau) expectations
Meanwhile, Chen told reporters after the press conference that the city’s tourism business over the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday had overall met Wynn Resorts’ expectations, adding that the occupancy rate at Wynn’s local hotels was “more than 99 percent”.
Chen commented that the number of people visiting the city had “increased by more than 23 percent compared to last year”, adding that this was generally good for Macau. Chen said that holding more activities could create a more festive atmosphere for Macau, which would further promote tourism development.
Chen was also asked about the government’s gaming industry amendment bill, commenting that despite some of Wynn’s funds resulting from foreign investment, the resort “has always been rooted in Macau and will fully cooperate with the regulations of the law”. Moreover, Chen said that every employee of the company was a stakeholder.
The amendment bill is currently under review by the standing committee of the Macau Legislative Assembly (AL).
Chen also said that Wynn Resorts (Macau) was “very confident” about bidding for a new gaming concession, adding she believes that the tendering process was part of the city’s constant development. She added that cooperation was needed to further enhance Macau’s development and allow the healthy growth of its tourism industry and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
