A female casino dealer was arrested last Wednesday for stealing chips at least 10 times worth HK$179,000 in total last month, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a press briefing yesterday.
The 47-year-old local suspect is surnamed Hong.
According to Leng, a staff member of a casino in Zape reported to PJ officers stationed at the casino last Wednesday that a female casino dealer stole chips while she was working that day. The officers retrieved a chip worth HK$20,000 which the suspect hid in her uniform. The Judiciary Police scrutinised the casino’s CCTV footage and discovered that Hong stole chips at least 10 times worth HK$179,000 in total between February 8 and February 23.
Under questioning, Hong admitted that she stole chips about 20 times worth about HK$300,000 in total, starting last month. After stealing the chips each time, she handed the chips to an accomplice to cash them in. Hong told the police that she had spent the ill-gotten money on her daily expenses. However, she refused to tell the police how she split the money with her accomplice. The Judiciary Police are continuing their investigation into the case, Leng said.
Hong was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) last Friday, facing an embezzlement charge, according to Leng.
