A Hong Kong businesswoman was arrested last Thursday for cheating a local victim out of 876,800 patacas in an investment scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a press conference on Monday.

The 56-year-old suspect is surnamed Wong. Leng did not reveal the victim’s gender.

According to Leng, the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) referred the fraud case to the Judiciary Police on April 14 last year to follow up on the investigation. Leng said that the victim got to know Wong through a friend in 2018. Wong persuaded the victim to buy a stake in a health food company and a technology firm in Macau. The victim invested HK$410,000 to become a shareholder. Afterwards, when the victim asked Wong about the companies’ business, the latter was unable to provide clear information.

Leng said the victim checked the companies’ account books recently and discovered that some of the funds had been transferred to Wong’s personal account, causing the companies a loss of 454,800 patacas in total. Therefore, the victim reported the case to the Public Prosecutions Office with a total loss of 876,800 patacas.

According to Leng, the Judiciary Police identified Wong as the suspect and told her to report to a police station for questioning last Thursday. Wong refused to cooperate with the police. However, the Judiciary Police believe that Wong defrauded the victim, based on the evidence and information gathered.

Wong was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office last Friday, facing a fraud charge, according to Leng.
