The Judiciary Police (PJ) received a call yesterday at 9:32 a.m. from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) that a man was threatening to jump off the rooftop of a high-rise under construction in Praça de Ferreira do Amaral, and requested the PJ’s crisis negotiation team to rush to the scene to assist in solving the matter, according to a message from PJ spokesman Chong Kam Leong.
According to Chong’s message, PJ officers and the negotiation team arrived at the scene separately and started negotiating with the man who intended to jump from the rooftop. However, at about 11:09 a.m., the man suddenly bowed to everyone at the scene and stepped close to the rooftop edge appearing to be ready to jump. Firefighters immediately stepped forward to grab him, but they failed to stop him from making the fatal leap.
Chong’s message stated that the victim was later found stuck in the scaffolding between the 13th and 14th floors. He was no longer breathing and had no heartbeat at that time. He was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment but was certified dead on arrival.
The identity of the deceased was still unknown when the message was sent yesterday afternoon. The case has initially been classified a dead body found and a forensic examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death. The Judiciary Police are following up on the case, according to Chong’s message.
