The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) said in a statement yesterday that 348 construction workers were hired after the bureau’s referrals between January 1 and March 22.

According to the statement, as a number of large-scale construction projects were completed recently, many constructions workers became unemployed. The statement said that since then the bureau has registered the workers’ personal data, arranged job matching, set up interviews and skill tests, and helped them find suitable jobs.

The statement noted that among the 519 registered construction workers affected by the completion of a major project, 460 were provided with job referrals. The statement said that besides welding, the workers also perform work such as formwork, painting, and cement work. The statement said that the bureau has contacted various entities and construction companies to help the workers find work, noting that 147 have already found a new job.

The statement said that of the second batch of construction workers, comprising about 250 who were affected by another project completion, 233 had been referred by the bureau, with 92 of them still waiting for interviews, while 48 have already been hired.

The statement said that between January 1 and March 22, the bureau referred 1,371 cases, but 300 refused to attend interviews, while of 1,000 who agreed to show up for an interview, only 774 did attend.
