The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it suspects vandalism was the cause of a tree that fell in Taipa on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the tree that fell in Rua Correia da Silva was a Chinese banyan. The statement pointed out that after a preliminary investigation, the bureau believes that someone damaged the roots of the tree affecting its growth, resulting in the fall. The bureau underlined that it has already reported the matter to the police.

The statement said that the bureau has set up a system to inspect trees in parks or along the pavements, noting that in 2021 the bureau inspected 68,000 trees and trimmed more than 19,000 of them. The statement also pointed out that since January, the bureau has inspected 13,600 trees and trimmed 4,400 of them. The statement underlined that as there has been a number of cases of falling trees recently, the bureau will review its system and inspect them more frequently. The bureau urged residents who spot any trees with abnormalities to report them to the bureau on 2833 7676.
