A woman from the mainland has told the police that she attempted to sell a piece of clothing for 85 yuan (107 patacas) but a “buyer” instead cheated her out of 15,000 yuan in the process, Judiciary Police spokesman Chan Wun Man told reporters on Wednesday during a regular press conference.

According to Chan, the woman posted a piece of clothing on an online platform, and a buyer expressed interest in purchasing it for 85 yuan. However, Chan added, the buyer claimed that an error had occurred on the platform and sent the seller a link to contact the platform’s “customer service”. Chan pointed out that after consulting the “customer service”, the seller was persuaded to transfer 15,000 yuan to reactivate her account on the platform.

Chan said that the customer service then tried to convince the seller to transfer more money but the latter lacked the money so she asked her friend to lend her some cash. Chan said that after the seller spoke to her friend, she realised that she had been scammed and reported the case to the police.

The police said that the offender was yet to be found at the time of the press conference.
