The Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) held its Project Final Report Meeting on Scientific Research Projects for Coping with COVID-19 yesterday afternoon at the Macau Science Centre in Nape, aiming to promote the application of science research results and reporting project research results to the public.

FDCT President Chan Wan Hei (陳允熙) told The Macau Post Daily after the ceremony that the event announced what the fund’s subsidised projects are and what those involved such as research teams, companies and universities have done, as well as what they have achieved.

Chan noted that those involved demonstrated their achievements and applications of the products and how research results could be applied.

When asked by The Macau Post Daily about the impact of these projects as well as their role in overcoming the pandemic situation, Chan said that the foundation’s mission is to help and promote Macau’s “research atmosphere” and push research achievements into application. He emphasised that there is a need to help and support research teams.

The results, an FDCT statement said, were reported during the event by scientific research teams of the University of Macau (UM), Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Macau Nanometals Technology Co. Ltd, while demonstrations of products were also done.

The statement pointed out that the fund “solicited scientific research projects for Coping with COVID-19 from local higher education institutions, science and technology enterprises and other institutions” at the start of February 2020. A total of 74 applications were received, the statement noted, where 26 were approved.

Chan told reporters that the total amount given to the projects that were approved was about 10 million patacas, with over 10 projects “have potential to be implemented”. He added that the maximum amount of funding for each project was up to 500,000 patacas.

The projects focused on research areas such as “rapid detection and diagnosis technology”, disinfection robots, and the “research and development of effective Chinese and Western medicines”, among others.

The statement added that through the development of the projects, various institutions such as universities and enterprises will be encouraged to develop “anti-epidemic application products”.
