Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong told reporters yesterday that a local man was arrested for picking up cash in the street and spending it.

Lam made the remarks during a regular press conference.

According to the Lam, last Thursday a local man, surnamed Chan, told the police that after withdrawing 19,000 patacas from an ATM in Avenida do Governador Jaime Silvério Marques (馬濟時總督大馬路), he went across the street to run some errands and then discovered that 16,000 of the 19,000 patacas had vanished. Lam said that Chan told the police that he did not put the banknotes in the cash compartment of his wallet but just laid the notes in between the wallet’s fold.

Lam said that the police then immediately checked the street’s CCTVs and discovered that a 51-year-old suspect, surnamed Ho, picked up Chan’s cash as soon as he dropped the banknotes in the street. Lam noted that soon after the police were able to arrest Ho at a hotel in Zape, adding that he admitted picking up the cash and claimed that he had already spent 11,000 patacas of it. Lam said that the police were able to find the remainder in his hotel room. Lam added that Ho has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) where he’s facing a charge of theft by finding.
