Labour Affairs Bureau lowers NRW quotas to stabilise local job situation

The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) said in a statement yesterday that at the end of February the number of non-resident workers (NRWs) was down by 28,096 compared with pre-COVID-19 days.

According to the statement, at the end of February, Macau had 168,442 NRWs. The statement underlined that companies must employ locals first before they can hire NRWs.

The statement said that from the first quarter of 2020 until the first quarter of 2022, the bureau has helped 8,225 residents to find a job. The statement pointed out that in order to continuously prioritise locals’ employment needs, the bureau has helped 3,154 residents find a job in the construction sector, 1,978 in the hotel and F&B sectors, 1,122 in the security and cleaning sectors, and 763 in the retail sector.

The statement also said that there are currently 4,486 vacancies, involving 70 sectors that are ready for job matching. The statement pointed out that the construction sector has 1,015 vacancies, while the retail sector has 951, the hotel sector has 606, the F&B sector has 545 vacancies, and the transportation sector has 176 vacancies.
