A guest speaker and audience members at yesterday’s Macau Forum open-air debate slammed the government for using “outdated” regulations and criteria for hoisting typhoon signals and making decisions that do not take residents’ safety into account.

Attending the forum as a guest speaker, Andy Tang Iu Man, who heads the Meteorological Division of the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), said his bureau would consider updating regulations on the criteria when a particular typhoon signal is to be hoisted, to ensure that the decision to hoist the signal will take residents’ safety into account.

The weekly debate is hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM in Areia Preta Park every Sunday.
