A drunk 28-year-old Indian tourist attacked and sexually molested a 20-year-old female university student in Rua da Palha in the city centre early Saturday morning, Public Security Police (PSP) Lam Leong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Lam, the incident happened at 4 a.m. when the drunk man, surnamed Sharma, pushed the victim onto the ground from behind and then proceeded to attack and molest her. Lam said that the victim fought back in an attempt to break free but the man started to slap her face repeatedly. Lam added that two non-resident workers from the Philippines saw what happened, and stopped the attacker. However, Lam said, he immediately sprinted away but was caught by the two Filipinos in Rua da Sé.

Lam said that one of the two Filipinos then reported the case to the police. Lam noted that the attacker admitted that he had been boozing before the incident, and decided to attack the victim after seeing her. Lam pointed out that the victim’s head, face and other parts of her body sustained injuries, while her phone was damaged during the attack. Lam said the victim claimed that her phone would cost up to 5,000 patacas to repair.

The suspect, who faces sexual coercion and property damage charges, was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday morning.
