The University of Macau’s (UM) Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) Deputy Director Lee Ming Yuen had his paper published in an international journal called Road to the East. Journal of Chinese-Portuguese Studies (Rotas a Oriente. Revista de Estudos Sino-Portugueses), according to a statement yesterday from the public university.

The statement noted that Lee’s paper, titled “The Importance of Cooperating with China in the Global Health System”, points out that an important role is played by the Chinese medicine (TCM) industry in the economic development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Macau’s appropriate economic diversification.

The government has established the Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau, which includes the Department of Chinese Medicine Services and Development, to give Macau’s Chinese medicine products opportunities to expand into the GBA and overseas markets, the statement underlined. Moreover, the statement added that the development of Chinese medicine research in Macau and its role as a hub for cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries has demonstrated the potential development of Chinese medicine.

The statement pointed out that Lee’s paper originated from his speech at the Health and Wellbeing New Silk Road Conference, which was held physically in Portugal as well as online. The event was organised by a think tank in Portugal formed under the central government’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), attracting scholars, medical and health experts, and researchers, among others.

The think tank, the name of which was not mentioned by the statement, was set up in 2016.

The statement underlined that the think tank is dedicated to promoting collaboration between China and Portugal under the BRI and collaboration between China and third parties, particularly other Portuguese-speaking countries.

The statement said that Lee gave a talk titled “Scientific Clues to the Mystery of Ginseng” at the 2022 Spring Conferences of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Portugal, offering scientific insight into the “mechanism of ginseng in the treatment of ageing and cardiovascular-related diseases”. The study was included in the journal of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Portugal and will be published this summer, the statement pointed out.
