A 49-year-old local man surnamed Ng was arrested in Zhuhai on Wednesday for being a fugitive convict from Macau, who had been sentenced to 18-year behind bars, and handed back to the police in Macau later that day, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the police discovered that the fugitive, who was convicted by a local court of organised crime membership, document forgery and fraud involving a considerable amount of money, had been seen in the mainland in January 2020. The statement noted he had fled before the Court of Final Appeal (TUI) turned down his appeal against his lower court jail sentence, so the court signed an arrest warrant and asked the police to cooperate with the mainland police in apprehending the fugitive.

The statement said that the fugitive had been seen in the mainland recently, adding that the local police had requested their Guangdong and Zhuhai counterparts to arrest and hand him back . The statement noted that on Wednesday morning, the Zhuhai police alerted the local police that the man had been arrested, adding that he was transferred to Macau on Wednesday night and taken to prison to start his 18-year term.

The statement did not mention the fugitive’s background. However, government-owned broadcaster TDM said that Ng was sentenced for his involvement in the high-profile corruption scandal that hit the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) a number of years ago.
