The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that a study by undergraduate student Liu Yichen from its Faculty of Science and Technology’s (FST) Department of Physics and Chemistry (DPC) and a research team led by his supervisor and FST Assistant Professor Liu Hongchao, was published in a top journal in the optics research field.

The study, published in Optics Express, is titled “Anti-loss-compression Image Encryption Based on Computational Ghost Imaging Using Discrete Cosine Transform and Orthogonal Patterns”, according to the statement. The statement added that it was the first time that a DPC undergraduate student has published a paper in “an SCI-indexed journal as the first author”.

Liu joined Prof Liu’s research group during his first year with a research focus on “ghost imaging and single-pixel imaging”, the statement said.

In the study, the statement noted that Liu proposed “a method to compress the bucket signals and illumination patterns of computational ghost imaging”. The statement added that the anti-loss-compression method can “greatly reduce the amount of cipher text and keys” and improve “the security of the optical encryption scheme based on computational ghost imaging”.

The full paper can be viewed at https://opg.optica.org/oe/fulltext.cfm?uri=oe-30-9-14073&id=471300.

The statement pointed out that project-based learning plays a vital role in students learning outside of the classroom and is a key feature of the DPC’s undergraduate programme. Students can join UM professor-led research groups to explore scientific research during their first year.

The statement underlined that a research-based learning mode enables students to develop their scientific thinking skills, analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and increase their understanding of theoretical knowledge and “cultivate their sense and ability in scientific research”.

Moreover, Liu published another paper as a co-author titled “Single-Pixel Imaging and Metasurface Imaging” in the journal Infrared and Laser Engineering in 2021, discussing the latest developments of “single-pixel imaging and ghost imaging” in the mainland and abroad, the statement added.
