An event was hosted yesterday by the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s (IC) Macau Public Library and the University of Macau (UM) Library titled “Talk on Reading Literacy in Public Libraries and University Libraries” as part of the “Macao Library Week”, according to an IC statement.

The talk, which was held at the UM Library’s auditorium, focused on the “similarities and differences between public libraries and university libraries in developing reading literacy from their perspectives, roles and positions”, the statement noted, and received an “enthusiastic response” from the public.

Hosted by UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities’ (FAH) Department of Chinese Language and Literature Professor Ma Wan Cham, the statement noted that the bureau’s Public Library Management Department Chief Loi Chi Pang and UM University Librarian Wu Jianzhong were the event’s main speakers.

The statement pointed out that Loi used “concrete cases” to introduce the city’s public libraries’ current services, collections, architecture and target users and explained concepts for library development, such as improving user accessibility to information in libraries with new technologies.

Wu, who was the director of Shanghai Library for several years and an International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Standing Committee member, shared his experience in managing public and university libraries as well as the importance of “information literacy in learning and research, and its positive role in professional career development”, the statement added. Methods of “developing reading literacy in different sectors and different audiences” were also discussed.

Meanwhile, the library week’s promotional days will be held over the coming weekend at the Old Courthouse and will feature various activities, the statement said. The statement underlined that the popular “Book Exchange” and “Periodicals Sale” activities will also be held again and residents with a “Stamped Scorecard” can exchange books of equivalent value at the Old Courthouse and the Seac Pai Van Library during the promotional days.
