A male mainlander enrolled in a higher education institution in Macau illegally worked as a tutor for a private tutorial centre for seven days before the case was discovered by the police last week, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday.
A female staff member of the tutorial centre was arrested for hiring the student. She is a non-resident worker, in her thirties from the mainland, surnamed Duan.
On Wednesday last week, according to the statement, the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) reported to the Public Security Police that someone was suspected of illegally working at the tutorial centre in Avenida do Almirante Lacerda (提督馬路). PSP officers went to the tutorial centre, when the mainland student, surnamed Liu in his twenties, was teaching schoolchildren.
Duan, the tutorial centre’s administrative assistant, was also working when the PSP officers entered the premises.
Under questioning, Liu admitted that he had been working as a tutor for seven days as he was filling in for a part-time tutor of the tutorial centre who could not work at that time.
According to the statement, Duan admitted that she knew that the tutorial centre had illegally hired Liu to work there, and the owner had asked her to pay Liu the relevant wages. However, Duan said that she had still not paid Liu any salary as he had been working for just seven days –before the case was discovered by the police.
The tutorial centre had agreed to pay Liu 50 patacas per hour.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation.
Hiring non-locals who do not hold a work permit to work in Macau is a criminal offence.
