The Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said in a recent statement that this year’s first online training session, themed “Market Brief – Mainland China”, was held late last month to improve the local MICE industry’s competitiveness and to better cope with its development under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement noted that industry experts and representatives were invited to share and exchange their views on market trends with the participants to keep them up-to-date with new MICE market trends in the mainland. Around 50 online participants from the local MICE industry, and teachers and students from local higher education institutions attended the event.

The webinar was moderated by IPIM’s MICE consultant Mike Williams and IME Consulting (Beijing) Managing Director Hong Yao, who discussed topics such as factors affecting mainland MICE organisers’ selection of destinations and the challenges they are facing, according to the statement.

The statement pointed out that keynote speakers mentioned that the mainland’s cost of organising events has increased owing to “the necessity of more backup plans” with new business trends and regulations because of the pandemic. A mix of online and offline activities is also “favourable in enabling event organisers to have more flexibility to cope with different situations”, the statement added.

Moreover, the statement underlined that Macau’s MICE facilities can meet the needs of large groups for various events, while Macau’s UNESCO World Heritage is also “very attractive” to the mainland market.

According to the statement, Macau and the mainland’s MICE industry “should maintain close ties” and take advantage of the industry’s “precise positioning” to expand the market.

Last year, three MICE webinars were held, attracting 160 local and mainland MICE industry participants and garnering over 2,000 views online, the statement said.
